What Is UPSC IFS?
The Indian Foreign Service (IFS) is one of the most prestigious and sought-after civil services in India. It is responsible for managing India’s external affairs and diplomatic relations with other countries. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) exam for recruitment into the IFS.
UPSC IFS Exam Eligibility Criteria 2023
The eligibility criteria for appearing in the IFS exam are as follows:
- The candidate must be a citizen of India.
- The candidate must be between 21 to 32 years of age as on 1st August of the year of examination.
- The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
- The candidate must have fluency in at least one foreign language, which is not mandatory but desirable.

UPSC IFS Training & Career Path
After clearing the IFS exam and the interview, the selected candidates undergo training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, for a period of two years. The training includes various aspects of diplomacy,
International relations, languages, and other related subjects. After the completion of the training, the candidates are posted in different Indian missions abroad or in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.
